Almeria is a province of the Autonomous Community of Andalucía. It is bordered by the provinces of Granada, Murcia, and the Mediterranean Sea. Its capital is the city of Almeria that was founded by Calipha Abd-ar-Rahman III of Cordova in 955 AD. It was to be a principal harbor in his extensive domain to strengthen his Mediterranean defences. According to some specialists the name Almeria can be interpreted from the Arabic word “Al-Mariyya” (The Mirror) but also form “Al-Mara'ā” (The Watchtower).
Almeria has been inhabited since the Bronze Age; some ancient caves with painting on the walls still exist. The Phoenicians, the Romans, the Iberians, the Cartaginenses and the Moors all once occupied Almeria until it finally fell to the Spanish 'Reyes Católicos' in 1489. A visit to the city offers you the chance to visit remains from all these periods.
The average temperature is 18ºC and during the summer it stays around 24.6ºC. The sea is beautiful; crystal clear, clean and normally a lot warmer than the air. Once you get in, you won't want to get out. Almeria also has some excellent beaches; the longest stretches of coastline in the whole of Andalucía.
This is where all those classic westerns were shot; "The Good, The Bad and the Ugly", "Lawrence of Arabia" and "A Fistfull of Dollars" etc... In fact, hundreds of westerns have been produced in the local hillsides. Its barren desert-like landscape is perfect.
This is a truly beautiful part of Spain. It's got something for everyone a diverse landscape with some excellent beaches, beautiful countryside and a wealth of history.
The province of Almeria is known as the warmest, driest and sunniest corner of Europe and it may very well be the place for your next golf holiday; the sunny climate makes Almeria the ideal all year round golf holiday destination.
Golfing visitors to this area could be forgiven for believing they have witnessed a mirage or two in recent times when stumbling across emerald green golf courses in the middle of the Almanzora Desert. Almeria has some of the most stunning and original golf courses in Spain from Desert Springs, which is the only Arizona desert style golf course in Europe to the oasis of La Envia.
Golf courses are less crowded and less expensive than those of the longer established golf holiday destinations such as the Costa del Sol or the Algarve.
